I'm going to try this on my Nikon D3 and my AF-S 17-35 F2.8 could probably benefit from it, thanks for posting.
Going to try CLR Clear to see if it works.
That's the method I use too. The only difference for me is, I get one of those green kitchen scourers and really get all that gunk off the mirror and lens!
