Solar Proms! Welcome back!

Hi All

I've been away a few months on holidays and yesterday was my first opportunity to get back into the swing of things. Got the gear out and spotted a lovely large prominence which I thought I would share here. What a welcome back!

Taken with my ES127mm refractor and Quark Prominence version.

I'm not a solar person at all but would love to know what the relative size of this flare is. How far out from the surface of the sun would that reach?????

The field of view across this frame is about 400,000 kilometres. So the width of the prom is about 180,000 kms across and about 55,000 kms high. The diameter of the Earth is 12,742 kms. So that works out to about 4 earths in height and 14 earth's in width across the prom..

David,
Ted said he was using the Prominence version of the Quark, not the more common Chromosphere version.
The prom version has a slightly wider bandwidth.

That looks interesting. Although expensive still makes sense considering you could use that on different scopes and given the price of dedicated solar scope with aperture it's a very good alternative. What do you mean by "when you get a good one". QC problems with the supplier?

That's exceptional Ted...there are very few solar prom images out there
at that standard. Nice one.

Solar proms! Welcome back!

Nice capture Peter. I viewed this myself and measured the height of the prom at 75,675 km with length 227,000 km. Quite a big one. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts. Atmosphere was too rough/windy for me to image. Thanks, JW.

Thanks Peter, as you know, always some luck in getting enough steady moments to attain a high s/n that handles the processing

Thanks, if you have a read of people's experiences on the net you'll find good and bad copies of Quarks. Some with exceptional band pass and others not so special. You do need to raise flags with the manufacturer if you think it is outside specs.
