ASI183MC Pro

Is anyone using an ASI183MC? I'm interested because the pixel size (2.4um) and resolution is suited to short focal length wide field. Though it is 12bit.

Interested to hear what people think of the camera.

Rowland, I have the 178MM, which preceded the 183 and has the same pixel size and technology, only in a smaller (6MP) sensor size.

I use it to push the limits of my Esprit 100, and it can’t defeat the laws of physics - it just needs more light. Exposure times are consequently longer than larger pixeled cameras, and the resolution is determined by the seeing as always, but it can produce decent results.

One thing to watch out for is that the amp glow on the Sony sensors can look horrific - although it can usually be calibrated out well.

The 183 would probably be well suited to a fast newt or a short, fast refractor.

Is your 178 a cooled version? Do you have some images with it?

Thanks Dunk.

It would be paired with my FS60CB, with reducer and / or flattener. f4.2 - f6.2.

Astronomy tools indicates the combination is good for very poor to OK seeing with reducer. I'm not sure whether the over / under sampling either side of ideal is important.

Compared to my 450D its a vast improvement in sampling.

Rowland, if you fill those wells up quickly with the faster focal ratio, you can just take more subs and drizzle

20MP is still a lot of pixels..

A couple of examples from last year using the ZWO ASI178MM-Cool with my Sky-Watcher Esprit 100. No funky processing tricks, such as deconvolution/sharpening or star reduction.
