The Pencil nebula taken with an Optolong L-Enhance filter. The relatively narrow band transmission makes the nebula stand out much better from the background, used with my D5600.

13x7 minutes, ISO 400: more time would be good but it was moving behind trees.

Moving behind trees?
Surely "weaving behind trees"☺.
That is a stunning result the detail seems rather good to me. Well done.

You have been a busy bee of late Tony smashing out the images well done. This is an intriguing nebula and I like your rendition, well captured colours match the typical representations and for 1.5hrs work a fine result I'd be happy with.
Tonight may be another chance under moonless skies to add to your data set perhaps.
Cheers
Anth

No special workflow Nik, but then I'm not an especially adept processor. I stack in DSS and embed settings, followed by either:

1. Pixinsight Histogram Transform, DBE and play with curves/levels/saturation in Photoshop, or..
2. I previously just did all of that in PS.

All very basic, no extracting channels, etc and no calibration frames - lights only (heresy I know ). I have done more complicated processing but I lean towards simple - however I'm always happy to receive processing tips as there's so much I haven't learned yet.

I appreciate everyone's comments. I hope to get another 1.5 hours tonight to add to the image.

It looks like the L-enhance filter may save me from having to take separate Ha/OIII and the extra processing that requires, although the narrower band filters might still be necessary under full moon.

So you process the colours as per normal? I'm not a pixiinsight fan so look to the simple ways

Yes, just like a broadband image. Of course there may be better ways to process. My idea is to use the L-Enhance on objects where the background needs toning down or where foreground stars are overwhelming.

I've got a Redcat ordered and I'm looking forward to using that field of view on the Vela SNR.

Nice one Tony, that's a very interesting target. Another 1.5 hrs of data should make a lovely job of it. I bet your looking forward to getting your Redcat , they look the goods.

Thanks Tony, the Redcat seems a little pricey but it'll give me 250mm focal length in addition to the 640mm of the TS115/reducer. The full frame ability is attractive too - I'm keeping my eye on developments in the low end FF mirrorless cameras.

That combination should yield a nice wide field alright, I can understand your allegiance to DSLR as well.
btw it seems the FLT 98 I acquired a while back belonged to you originally (your name is on the box I noticed recently) I'd love to know it's history if you're ok with that, PM me if you like.
Cheers,
Ant.

I doubled the exposures to 3 hours total (second image in the first post) and it gave a marginal improvement.

Nice, its cleaning it up and showing the background Halpha and the filaments in the pencil. Next stop, 10 hours - you know you want to do it ...

I think narrower band might be needed to do much better on this object Chris. I've got Ha 7nm and OIII 8.5nm filters - might give it a go when the moon is interfering with other imaging.
