The main advantage of the DSLR over a similarly speced CCD camera is the price, especially in the mid ranged cameras. A 600D, unmodded, will only set you back around $350-$500 for the body only (new) and the mods will cost less than that. Whether you'd want to cool it or not would be up to you. Try buying a CCD camera with 18.1MPix for that price...put a "1" in front of the 3 or 5 and add an extra 0 to the end of the price and you may be able to get one. Your DSLR is no mono CCD camera but it can certainly hold its own with OSC CCD cameras. The only advantage an OSC has over a DSLR is that it comes with the cooling built in, usually, and it's designed "off the cuff" for astropics. Most still don't match the DSLR pixel count wise. If you had a 60Da, which you can pickup for under $1100 if you know where to buy, you could build your own cooler for it for peanuts and get a cooled astropic ready camera for a lot less than paying for even a relatively cheap, but less capable CCD camera, e.g. Atik 314L+ (1.4MPix, $1850).

Would that be this one by any chance?

It's excellent but they have improved on that since with CCD

You must have been taking astrophotos on film for a while..?

Hi Mike, No, that's not the one; the one that I recall was at a slightly
lower magnification so the whole galaxy fitted easily into the frame,
was probably not as deep, as the colours were not as saturated, and
was pin sharp.
Yes Cometcatcher, I took my first astropic in1961.Our equipment
was not really non-standard; basic early 35mm camera, 6" f6 Newt.
non motorised EQ mount with manual slow motions. Standard
commercially available film, such as Konica 3200 ISO, Kodak
Tech Pan 2415 for monochrome. For exposures over about 5 mins
we hypered it. The hyper tank was a one off expenditure, and the gas was not expensive. Most cooling was home devised. The only possible
post exposure manipulation was dodging and burning in the dark room,
to avoid washing out the highlights. Manual guiding for an hour was a real pain in the rear end.
Anyway, thanks again fellas for the encouragement; I'll soldier on.
Now I am going to investigate those links you sent me.
Happy snapping raymo.
P.S. I'll see if I can dig that image up, although I haven't been able to work out how to post images to IIS, what with resizing and all that jazz.

Okay you win. That's two years before I was born. My first astro pic was around 1977 of the moon through a Tasco 80mm refractor.

You'll have to upload some pics from that era if you still have them to take us down memory lane.
