dss tutorial and help

Hey guys

Having some issues with dss. After stacking canon raw images I seem to be getting an already stretched, or non linear image. I have tried a few different stacking methods all with the same result. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong (using dss 3.3.4).

Also, I remember someone wrote an excellent tutorial of sorts in someone's thread a while ago. Would anyone happen to have a link to this for me please?

Thanks

Hey again,

So, I've had a couple of days to play around with some settings and I think I've made some progress

Here are images of one frame and the result of a stack

Frame - http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5f8d006b.jpg

Stacked(no processing at all) - http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/...ps91fa972f.jpg

Using the following settings

Stacker Settings -
Result - Standard Mode
Light - Average
Alignment - Automatic
No RGB or Per channel background calibration

Raw Settings -
Brightness, red scale, blue scale - 1.00000
Using Camera White Balance
Bilinear Interpolation

Image was taken through FSQ106 with a unmodded Canon 60D
23 frames of 450 seconds at 400ISO

Am I on the right track here?
Are any of my settings kind of wierd/strange?

Thanks

Are you inputting RAW files? (I think Canon raws are *.CRW) Did you use calibration frames? (darks, flats, bias/offset)

Inputting Canon raw files (.CR2)
Haven't used any calibration frames yet as I was just trying to fix the washout I was getting with DSS.

Had a slight issue with Darks for this image set as well, accidentally selected the wrong ISO setting in my lack of sleep stupor... Looks like I'll have to get the Esky out with a few ice bricks to get the temperature at around the right level. (unless anyone else has a better idea than sticking my camera in an Esky?)

I wait for another night of the same temperature (but cloudy). There are various ways to stack the lights that you can try, e.g. sigma clipping, but average is a good start. Now you need to start some post-stacking processing. Don't do this in DSS, try another package, like StarTools or Nebulosity.

I've been messing around with PixInsight, loving it... even the very steep learning curve. I just had some issues with DSS that I had never seen before, at one stage the stacked result was just a white screen.

Although when I had those issues I was in hospital on my laptop (5yo laptop) and now I'm stacking on my high end desktop. So perhaps it was a combination of inadequate 32bit computer and my pain-killer haze

Thank you for your help though, it is much appreciated.
