New Canon Full Frame DSLR - Rumoured 5D Mk II

Well Canon are holding their cards tight but latest rumours have a new Canon Full Frame body being announced by end of September.
As I've motioned they'll probably announce it at Photokina in Germany.

The much anticipated Canon 5D Mk II is said to up the specs substantially over it's predecessor.
We'll have to wait and see if it's true.

A whopping 21.1 MP Full Frame sensor driven by a Digic 4 processor capable of 5 fps.

ISO capability up to 12800 and down to 50.

HD Movie mode and HDMI out.

The micro lens gap has been reduced enabling capture of all the light hitting the sensor.
The new 50D sensor now achieves effective 100% coverage so the same goes for the 5D Mk II.
These new bodies have certainly opened up more options for both terrestrial and astro imaging.

It will be interesting to see what can and will be achieved.

Rumoured 5D Mk II Specs:

* 21.1 MP 1.0x
* DIGIC 4
* ISO 100-6400 (Low mode:50 & High mode:12800)
* 5 fps
* 3.2" LCD High Resolution Screen
* 19 point AF
* HDMI Out
* LiveView
* HD - Movie Mode
* Viewfinder: 100% Coverage
* Full weather sealing
* EF Lenses only (no EF-S lenses)

Just looking at the way Canon has organised its cameras in a the past, I highly doubt they will release a camera with more megapixels than their flagship 1ds Mk3. The 1ds Mk3 has 21 MP so I could see the 5D Mk2 having 16 at most. The old 1ds was 11, then the went up to 16 with the mk2, then the 5D came out with 11, so it make sense the new 5D will have 16 this time around. But keep in mind that 16 MP is already too much resolution for all but the best lenses (only a few of the L series can deliver the goods).

12800 ISO? Thats 3 stops more than 1600... that would be nice if it looks good!

I've been keen to see this camera for ages, all sorts of rumors have surrounded it. Can't wait.

Well as you probably know, the new Canon 5D MKII was unveiled today.

I wasn't too far off with the specs:

It's capable of ISO 25600 instead of 12800.
And 3.9 fps instead of 5 fps.
9 AF points

It's interesting to read the following from the Canon Press Release:

Quote:
Canon, the first company to introduce a full-frame digital camera, has improved the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera's newly developed full-frame CMOS image sensor.
Utilizing proprietary Canon technology, the Company has reduced noise and expanded the sensitivity of the CMOS sensor up to ISO 25600, which is three full stops higher than the ISO 3200 limit of the original EOS 5D camera.
Although the individual pixel dimensions of the EOS 5D Mark II camera are the same as the 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor used in the EOS-1Ds Mark III digital SLR, the new sensor incorporates an improved output amplifier and a more advanced color filter that improves light transmission while retaining excellent color reproduction.
By applying the same kind of advancements in sensor design and image processing technology as the recently introduced EOS 50D camera, but at higher resolution and with larger pixels, the EOS 5D Mark II achieves the highest level of image quality of any EOS Digital SLR released to date.
It will certainly be interesting to see the results of this new monster.

LOL Houghy, I've got to return the prototype to Canon by next week, part of the NDA - Non Disclosure Agreement I signed.
Sad to see it go actually.
