ToUcam

I want to try planet/lunar photography and after reading all I can,I believe the best affordable camera would be a webcam. The Philips ToUcam is the one that every body agrees is the best. I am struggling to find a supplier as they are discontinued line. Anyone know of a retailer who still has them .Or does anyone have a good alternative

Give Matthew a call to see if he has any in stock or can get one for you.

Hi Keppar,

The ToUcam is probably the best lunar/planetary webcam for a beginner to start off with. The next step up from the ToUcams are the Imaging Source cameras, which are made specifically for Planetary imaging.

Have a look at Ebay as I have seen a couple for sale for a fairly decent price.

Hope you are able to find one.

this may be a very dumb question but is there any real difference between the TouCam and the Imaging Source cameras except for the speed of download?

The offer at MSY, $79 for the Phillips SPC900NC, was so good...I just picked one up for myself from their Clayton store today

Seeker,
I have both the DMK21 firewire and a couple of webcams...
Although I paid top dollar for the DMK, it really hasn't lived up to expectation. Over priced.
For the majority of my imaging ( read: all the time!) the webcam seems to be just as good.

Glad to help. Where are you getting an adaptor? I've ordered one from Steve Mogg:

...but I just noticed that Luke Bellini from Star Stuff (in Melbourne) sell them as well:

You will also need a IR cut filter as the camera sensor detects IR wavelengths...which tends to "Bloom" images. Plenty of suppliers have those.

Edit:
don't forget to get the Philips SPC900NC adaptor as the neck for these is slightly longer than some.
