Question Refurbished DSLR Camera's from Canon?

Hi All,

I know I have seen these advertised overseas for 1/3 of the original cost. Just wondered if anyone has got one, or knows a local place to get one. Who is the Australian repairer for Canon? Would they sell them?

I am thinking of picking a 2nd hand or Refurbished one to modify for Astro use.

Lastly shutter life for the Rebel's is supposedly 50000 clicks, what happens when you the shutter dies is there hope for repair or replacemnt of the shutter? Would the refurbished ones come with a new shutter?

Regards
Fahim

I'm guessing (yeup, 100% speculation here) refurbished are just cleaned up, checked for dings/scratches/rattles, and put through a diagnostic and QA check. Any defects would be repaired, but working components will likely be left as is. Why replace working components on something that won't sell for retail or carry a full warranty?

Given that the cost of shutter replacement in the USA is $160+, and likely around $300 here if you can extrapolate using typical mark-up, I doubt a refurb is going to come with a new shutter, unless it was the shutter that died in the first place. There are enough error 99's out there that you do have to wonder.

My old spare body 10D was worth so little that I had nothing to lose doing an IR mod on it, at least now I have a camera that I can take some interesting shots with It didn't make doing the mod itself any easier, but it did cut down somewhat the intensity of the glares from my wife vs. had I tried to mod her new 40D (the toughest part was the proper installation of the adhesive silicone used to hold the new filter glass in place, it took me a couple of days to get it right)

Thanks Citivolus, i guessed as much. And i know what you mean about the 'intensity of the glares'. I would not mod the 400D especially since it has 5 years warranty on it. It would be better to get a used one or a Refurb one and then mod that.

Are there any modders for these cameras in Australia?

David at Khromagery http://khromagery.com.au/index.html does filter mods to EOS digitals. He'll put in a Baader, R72, or clear filter or a few others.

I had my 30D done with a clear filter, so then it was sensitive to UV, visible and IR. The sensitivity to H-alpha went up by about x5. Pity someone pinched my camera...

He won't do a 400D as he said they are too hard to do. He was going to have a go at a 40D this week to see what they are like.

Hi Brendan,

http://www.adorama.com/Search-Result...bished%20canon

I have also found this site that provides prices from various stores and also shows user feedback and ratings.
http://www.resellerratings.com/

A quick search on NewEgg.com also reveals good deals on new equipment.

And this company has a good reputation and ratings from its users. Wonder if they will ship to Australia. Sent an email to ask them, will advise.
