New Eyepiece Box

Hi everyone,

For a while now I have been thinking of an eyepiece box to complement my SDM telescope snd assortment of high quality eyepieces.

Enter Dean Davidson who agreed to make me one to my specifications. It arrived today and I think you can see he did a simply outstanding job. It looks absolutely beautiful outside and in. The lid has a dimmable red light and out of sight under the eyepiece holes runs a dew strip powered from an external supply.

If you are interested to acquire one feel free to contact me for details.

Beautiful. Always wondered with this type of box whether the handle on top is strong enough once it's filled with heavy eyepieces?

Ok so, dimensions are W=50cm D=26cm and H =24cm

I have just put it on the scales with all my eyepieces in and it weighs 12.1 KG. It feels like nothing really though. The handle feels more than strong and secure enough and the clasps too.

My configuration has 5x 2” slots and 10x 1.25”.

I have:

31mm Nagler
21mm Ethos
17mm Nikon Nav HW
13mm Ethos
8mm LVW
2x Powermate
3 pairs of 1.25” I use for Binos.

The box has a separate pull out section for misc parts.

That looks great Chris
I do like the timber eyepiece cases, that’s a good idea to have a removable section also. Here’s a photo of a couple of microscope cases that I want to make something similar, when I get a chance!

Beautiful box Chris. When did you end up buying the 21 Ethos? Very jealous!

A month or so ago, in fact as I’m currently between scopes I still haven’t ever looked through it!

Hi guys, just weighing in (pun intended).

I was concerned it would be strong enough when I was making it because this box uses brass fittings, instead of the "industrial" steel ones I originally intended to use: 'cos brass is prettier!

I tested the box with 10kg of weights before I sent it to Chris: no problems. (The bare box weighs just over 6kg). I used bolts for the hinges and handles to ensure it was strong enough: and I also put handles on the sides just in case... It took a bit of chasing around, but I eventually found some nice solid brass clasps which more than cope with the weight.

It was also stained to (hopefully!) match the SDM scope that Chris has under order.

If anyone is interested in something similar, please PM me, and I can make it to your specs.

- Dean Davidson
