Polemaster, PHD & alignment

I'm wondering in what order should I be doing all my alignments. Should it be:

1. Mount (ie telescope) alignment
2. Polemaster for polar alignment
3. PHD for drift alignment?

Or if I'm already using Polemaster, do I even need to bother with PHD?

If by telescope alignment, you mean the one, two or more star alignment, that is the last thing to do.

I would do

1. Start from parked position (Counterweights down, pointed at pole)
2. Polemaster alignment
3. Drift alignment check if you want to do that.
4. Star alignment of the mount. Do this one last as any polar alignment adjustments will invalidate it if you do it first.

I wrote that assuming that you are using the hand controller? That being the case the quickest way to sort the star alignment after dong the polar alignment would be just to power the mount off, release the clutches and manually put the mount back to counterweights down, pointed at the pole, then power on again. You also need to redo the star alignment if you release the clutches and manually move the mount while it is tracking (Unless you have one with encoders on the axes like an AZEQ6)

Yeah I'm using a SynScan hand controller on my EQ6-R. I think I'll try Polemaster first, then 2-star alignment second (without releasing the clutches - not sure what would be the point). Then I'll use PHD once I've picked my target in the sky. Does that sounds about right?

If you want to use it , your EQ6-R and Synscan handcontroller already has a polar alignment routine which doesn’t require a view of the pole
It’s under Set up ,Alignment ,Polar Alignment in the menu
I have a HEQ5 and 2 x EQ6-R mounts and that’s all I use to polar align
Pick a star near the south meridian about 35 to 60 deg in Alt for your PA star and find another not far away for your Star alignment
I can send you a step by step procedure for Synscan Polar Alignment if you wish

Martin has sent me the steps, which I am currently going through and using to set up my mount. They are very thorough and leave nothing to chance.
