Set out originally for the Witches Head beside Rigel but no way getting close with this one so instead tried a widefield shot of the belt stars of Orion, taken with Canon Telephoto Lens 300x /40min @ISO 800 f5.6 - half moon lit backyard, still evening, fair conditions. Minkata just sneaks in the frame.
Wow Anthony, that's a great effort from your backyard in Melbourne I presume. With a combination of significant moonlight and light pollution, you've managed to pull out fantastic colours both from the nebulosity and stars. Were you using any LP filters for this? Love these widefields taken with basic lenses, it just shows what can be done. Thanks for sharing.

I'd really love to own a short focal length scope one day for just this sort of image. Alas the telephoto will do for the time being. I would normally fall In the trap of bumping up the ISO to drag out the fainter stuff but I bit the bullet and chose for the low ISO. It worked well I thought particularly in keeping the noise down on such a warm night. Bader uv/or cut filter used in a makeshift adaptor with tape to secure. I did try my LP filter but it didn't seem to work well with the lens. The stars had too much coma so refrained from using it.
All up a result that was fun obtaining, and surprised with the outcome to be honest.
And yep, was taken from the outer north east melb. Pretty good sky out here Not much light about, perhaps everyone has escaped for the holidays.

A mate of mine picked it up second hand for me, and I've used it a couple of times now for widefield shots. Handy lens to have actually.

It is a beautiful constellation, one I always look forward to seeing this time of the year. Showed some family members and they were taken by its wonder as well. I enjoy sharing these with friends so they can enjoy as much as I do.

Great image. Could you clarify your settings?
You quoted 300x40mins....Is that a total exposure of 40 mins split into 300 sub exposures? ie 300x 8s? or is the 300x referring to the zoom set to 300mm and it's a single 40 min exposure, unlikely given the half moon?
Sorry Joe I should have realised when I wrote that it would cause confusion.
It was taken at 300mm focal length and total integration time of 40 min using 55 subs at 45sec each all at ISO 800 setting stacked in DSS and processed with startools and PS.

Always the way Alex, got to take your chances though, Melbourne is always hit and miss, mainly miss especially on a new moon hehehehe. On holiday at the moment with my eyes peeled for the next opportunity. May try a different approach for the Witches head next time around.
