Meteor or Rocket Trail, Moon and Venus. Dec 27 2011, Orleans Bay WA

Hi,

I was down Esperance way for the comet from the 26 -> 28th Dec. On the night of the 27th cloud was approaching from the west and threatening to scupper things, so rather than shoot the comet I decided to do a moon/venus/sunset timelapse over the ocean from Orleans Bay.

As luck would have it, in addition to the moon and venus, it appears I also captured the remnants of an exploding meteor or maybe a rocket trail? It stayed in view for a good 30 minutes and in the timelapse it appears higher than the cyrus and moving in the opposite direction.

Nice shot! Smooth and great colours.

I received some google alerts about that event around then. People from the area reported it to BOM and the Perth Observatory. I didn't see a consensus on what it was, but obviously the suggestions were in line with what you said - rocket or meteor.

Roger.

Thanks Roger. Lucky to be in the right spot with the cameras rolling. What google alerts are those?

You can set up alerts with google for search phrases, so any new content indexed containing that phrase you will get an email telling you about it.

I have quite a few set up, the one which found this was a "Perth Observatory" as a local Esperance newspaper had interviewed the about the object.

Cheers. Just did some googling. It appears the reports of lights falling from the sky were around 6.20pm and I started shooting at 7.20. So whatever it was my shots were taken a good hour after the main show. Missed the light show myself... head down hiking the peak to get to the sunset spot.
