Unfortunately the D3400 has only one HDMI socket and one mini USB socket , and the
MC-DC2 remote I already have does not have a mini USB.
It doesn't even look like the one on eBay.
I have no idea what the eBay people are selling, and am still somewhat confused.

I control my Nikon 5200 direct from my laptop using Digicam, and it's free.

Just confirm with the seller the intervalometer works with your model camera body or can return it if not. There are tons of sub $20 ones from China and I prefer them to the official Nikon ones. It might not look like the description photo (they often reuse the same description for a bunch it listings), but each one I bought worked fine (still do after years of use), same with battery grips the nikon ones are horribly overpriced.

I just bought this one, works fine, and it came from Sydney.

you used that with a D3400?

i have tried linking my d3400 to my samsung s8 with an OTG USB adapter but they can't seem to "find" each other.

very frustrating that nikon removed the accessory terminal for the d3400.

one other bit of information i received directly from a nikon employee: there is no way to control the shutter with the snapbridge app on a d3xxx or d5xxx, but this IS possible with a d7xxx or other higher end camera. weird that they deliberately removed a feature from their app for the lower end DSLRs.

if anyone has had luck making a timelapse with a d3400 i would very much like to know (other than by hand with the ML-L3 remote, which i regretfully have done and it SUCKS). cheers
