Your shout, cheap drinks, dinner and show for $6.00

Hi Guys,

I came across this old Menu today when one could go to a live show and have dinner for under $6.00
And have a look at the price of drinks, crazy, but then it was about 60's to 70's i suspect

What a blast from the past. Has to be after 1966 as prices are in dollars and cents. Show how much inflation has hit, but I suppose it is all relative to wages at the time. Had many a chuck with some of those wines mentioned, gawd they were bloody awful.

Yep Andrew, that's a phone number, and not a mobile in sight, the internet hadn't even been born.

The 6 digit numbers imply circa 1971, as we went to 7 shortly after in Sydney.

The wine list ... oh dear me... can recall some of these too. Wines best forgotten.

Now oysters $1.75 any style, presumably for a dozen !!! Darn things can cost more than that, EACH.

How much would it even cost to go to Les Girls these days? (haven't ever had the inclination to find out).

You're ignoring inflation. Easy mistake to make.

It's not that cheap when you take inflation into account.

Average wages in the early 70's were $50-70 per week, now $600-$1200 depending where you live. So a factor of 12-24 has to be applied or get the CPI ratio from the ATO site.

---------------------12x---------24x----
Meal and show....$69.00......$138.00
Cognac..............$12.00......$24 .00 Glass
Brandy...............$8.40.......$1 6.80 Glass
Claret................$33.00......$ 66.00 Bottle

Mumm...............$126.00....$252. 00 Bottle
Great Western....$60.00......$120.00 Bottle

Joe

yes at 85c large or 50c small the beer is dear.
In 1972, public bar prices were 18c for a middy & 24c for schooner.

Sammy lees all male revue ran from 65-75 ish according to google I'd pick early 70s it actually seems expensive ..

There were some quirky liscencing laws floating round queensland in the 70s so maybe nsw /vic as well , in that venues /nightclubs had to offer a meal with entry to shows

you didn't have to actually eat it(and probably shouldn't of )..every one of them nailed you with drink prices .. late 70s a band and meal could be as

little as $4..so sammy and his ladyboyz sound a little upmarket for the time.

I nearly fell over backwards when I was charged 7s 6d for a scotch & orange
[might have been a double] in the Oceanic Hotel [I think it was] at Manly, or Bondi, or somewhere around there, in June of 64.

I hope you have managed to quit Bill The percentage of Aussies who smoked daily in 1974 was nearly 50%...in 2018 we are now in sight of just 10% of Aussies smoking daily...that's an amazing shift...and pricing has been a huge factor.

Yes I did give up the smokes, not because of health reasons but because I was spending more per week on smokes than on food.

Brisbane went to 7 digits in 1975, and 8 digits in 1996, and I would guess Sydney was similar, so that would put the flyer as being between 1966 to 1975.

It was quite good in it's day.
