Off Axis Guiding v dual chip camera

Have decided to go down the OAG or dual chip camera path.

Would like some ideas on the benefits of dual chip camera versus OAG.

Recommendations of both.

I have a QHY9 with CFW and an Orion deluxe OAG that I have never been able to put together as my imaging train to operate on my GSO 10"RC. How could I do this?

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Frank

Frank,
OAG's must be set up and focused during the day. It's 100% easier focusing on a distant object in both the imaging camera and the guide camera.
The trick is to set up with the imaging camera in focus, and DON'T move it or the telescope focuser - don't touch it!
Then, using spacers, extension tubes, whatever it takes, bring the edge ( as the prism only sees the extreme outer edge of the FOV) into focus with the guide camera. using an eyepiece may give you a good starting point.
I find that it's better to have the OAG body at the top ie in dec so you can slightly move the scope with the fine controls to "ease" the target object into the guide field. Definately a fiddly first time set-up, but if nothing is subsequently moved it will be ready for the next session.
BTW Just double check the prism in the Orion is properly positioned - looking directly forward..there's a sneaky little grub screw which sometimes can come loose and let the prism rotate.

Merlin,

Thanks for the advice but I can't even get the OAG to fit into the imaging train. It won't connect without surgery and I don't know what needs to be done.

That's why I was looking at dual chip cameras as well. I thought about AO but it looks pretty expensive.

Are there any advantages of one type of guiding over the other?

Hmmm
What scope and set-up are you trying to use...
I found the Orion to be a good OAG (other than that sneaky prism screw!!)...the Celestron Radial was just a little better.....the Meade...absolute rubbish.

It's to go on my GSO 10" RC with a QHY9. I have no idea how to get it to fit.

The Orion has a 2" nosepiece which should fit your 2" focuser...the rear port has a T thread which should screw directly into the body of the QHY.....or am I missing something???

The Orion is a different size to the QHY and they don't fit together.

According to the QHY website the camera has a female M42 x0.75 T thread and the Orion has a male M42 x 0.75 T thread, so they should just screw together.
The above message shows an Orion coupled with a T2 adaptor and the general set-up.
Can you post a photo of your "problem" area???

Frank, is that a mono qhy9 with a wheel? If so, theo has M54 male to M42 female adapters to go into the front of the wheel.

Merlin,

Thanks for all your help. It looks like there is an adaptor available to do the connecting. Robin, yes it is the 9 mono I will drop Theo an email.

Then I can put into practice all the tips on using it that I have been given.
