I strongly reccomend pixinsight to use - such a powerful program!
Don't forget to check out NINA - free compared to 130 for SGP.

Any idea what to do with the ring on the left or the two screws. ..the two holes on the ring are unthreaded??
The units on the right I presume dont have to go in as my filters screwed in...

I'm just learning myself, and as far as I can tell, yes, pixinsight is powerful and if you have the time to learn it, great, but it's also not for the faint of heart, it's fairly expensive and it's poorly documented for such a complex program - as in, there is literally no manual. You can look at processing videos, but you can't just go 'Hm, I wonder what that does' and look it up in a reference, which is pretty lazy, IMO. To find out, you will need to google the PI forum and read the thread and extract the relevant tidbits of information from the noise of the thread. unless more experienced users know something I don't?

But I guess there's Startools as well. Or you can use Photoshop to a certain extent. I just took the plunge because I figured I'm here for the long haul, I might as well get the right tools for the job and take the pain of that poorly documented learning curve once.

The whole point is there is no manual
You make a workflow that works for you!
If there was a manual all the images would be bad and look the same!

Not a manual for workflow, a manual that tells you what the individual components do. There's a difference. :-)

OK I have N.I.N.A. now on the lappy.
SO I can switch on the cooler but cant work out how to tell the camera to expose for 30 seconds or at all ...and how to get the filter wheel to work?
I will have a break and look again after.

"Inside PixInsight" by Warren Keller. It's not a manual but a third party book and it lives next to my left elbow as I sit at the computer. A really good way to come to grips with PixInsight.

Did not get far with NINA so got a trial of Sequence Generator Pro.

I have set up mount scope and cameras insude the house so I can work on it all at my time frame.
So far Sharp Cap has come closest to getting a working camera so I may get the latest version to see if it can control the 8 unit filter wheel.
I will be back in a couple of days or more with advice of sucess or some new questions.
Thanks for all the help.

I have now set up everything in the house ... mount is on and tracking the ceiling, capture camera and guide camera in place.

I have downloaded Sharpcap latest version. ..

On screen is Sharpcap and a pop up box showing EQMOD HEQ 5/6 but there is a message "Connect error: Port Not Avaialable.

What have I missed?

I have never used ASCOM but I expect there is a connection between the hand box that I need to the lap top?

I would appreciate any help.
I feel so close now☺
Alex

There is only one lead from the ZWO cooled cam to the lappy.
The usb 2 port on the zwocooled has one lead from it to the filter wheel ..the other at this point is empty..should I plug the guide camera in here?

If I recall right you have an EQ6 mount so you should get one of these to connect the laptop straight to the mount. https://www.bintel.com.au/product/sh...eq6-interface/.

Note that you can get standard USB-serial cables that look the same and cost less but operate at a different voltage and could damage your mount if you connect them to it directly. They will work if you connect them to the hand controller instead.

Alternatively, for now you could connect the guide camera to the mount with a ST4 cable but that would only allow guiding but not goto control from the laptop.

You probably have a cable with serial plug on one end and a ST4 (telephone) plug on the other end that should have come with your mount. The ST4 plug goes into the bottom of your hand controller. If you have a serial port on your laptop just plug the other end there. Most current laptops don't have a serial port so you need a USB/serial adapter cable. I got one from Jaycar - they're easy to find. Once you've done what you need to set up with your hand contoller you can then just select "PC Direct Mode" from the Utilities menu on your hand controller and the laptop takes over.

Yes, the usb ports on the back of the camera work as a hub and save you running extra cables from your mount to your PC.

Good luck!

Kevin,
The standard SW "upgrade" cable is not an ST-4 cable, just a RJ12 comms cable.....

On the subject of ZWO cameras, USB serial connections , drivers etc....

I’m setting up my new laptop next week ( when it decides to finally arrive &#129324
Installing Ascom , EQMOD, Backyard EOS, Stellarium, Stellarium scope, PHD2, Autostakkert, Deep Sky stacker and Startools etc....

I’m controlling my HEQ5 Pro mount using both options PC Direct ( handcontroller still connected ) via a serial USB adapter and EQDirect USB via a shoestring USB2EQ5 custom cable

When I purchased the Digitech serial USB adapter it came with a mini CD so you would assume one would have to install the respective driver in order to assign a com port for the serial USB adapter ??

In regard to ZWO cameras I purchased the ZWO ASI 120MM to use for autoguiding, once again I would assume you would have to install the respective driver for this camera so the Laptop can communicate to the camera over USB ?

Thanks in advance
