Mechanical shutter release cable Intervalometer

I've recently downsized my camera to a Fujifilm X100s and I'm really happy with it so far. However the one thing it can't do, and that I'll miss from my 5DmkII, is the ability to do timelapse photography.

So I've built a little contraption with a servo that actuates a mechanical shutter release cable. It's run from an Arduino Nano and has a 7.4 volt LiPo RC battery. I 3D printed a structure that holds the servo and the shutter release cable.

It's pretty basic to operate, turn it on then press a button to choose how long between shots (each press adds 5 seconds so two presses would be 10 sec interval - a LED flashes to signify how long after each press), then press another button to start.

I haven't really tested it out yet so I don't know how long the battery will last but I think it should be plenty.

Here's a quick video of an earlier version made using an Arduino Uno and an early version of the 3D printed bracket thing:

Very clever Hugh

Does the Fuji camera have a plug (usually 3.5 stereo type) for an electronic release?

This is what I am using on my Canon eos600D and it works well. So if you have the plug and the invention becomes a nuisance in some situations (as does the size of my camera sometimes) then I recommend it to you.

Meanwhile, well done.

Thanks Trevor,
No it doesn't have any kind of electronic shutter release. The newest version, the X100t has Wi-Fi and you can use an app on your phone/tab to trigger it and do timelapse stuff but my version, the X100s, and the original X100 have only a mechanical shutter release.

That's awesome Hugh! I use the X100, it takes brilliant nightscapes and I have often wished I could do some time lapses with it.

A great solution.

Cheers

Thanks Jo

I'd be happy to share all the details with you if you wanted to have a go at putting one together.

Sorry to bump such an old thread!

Do you mind sharing some details on how you built this intervalometer? I'd like to make a mechanical one -- it really sucks that there's no 2.5mm input on the X100.
