What a joke!
US$1800 = AU $2140 at the moment. I've never bought anything significant from Ted's before, and prices like that are exactly why I probably never will. They never seem to have any good prices on Nikon gear whenever I'm looking for something.
When the D300 becomes available in November I'd expect the price to be under AU$2600, thats about what I paid for my D200 after it was released 2 years ago for the same US$ price. If the demand for the D300 is below that of the D200 when it was released (there were long waiting lists), I'd expect the local price to go below AU$2300 pretty quickly, and the US price to go to US$1600-1700. It will get cheaper, but I would never expect is to be cheaper than a 40D. If I was going to buy a D300 (which I might), I'd wait until after Christmas and import one
