Wide angle lenses

I'm interested to hear opinions / experiences / recommendations about wide angle lenses for shooting the night sky as I'm looking to buy one for my Canon 80D for under $500. There have been quite a few mention of the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 on the internet but I don't know how it compares to other wide angle lenses around the same price.

Wink

Rokinon 8 mm F3.5 on Nikon D5600 ISO 3200 for 25" is wider .
I know , it's a Nikon and hence anathema to a true Canonite , but I'm reasoably happy .
Jupiter , Antares , Arcturus from Heathcote Victoria .

Samyang/Rokinon/Bower (all the same) have a range of lenses that seem goo for astro.

I have had a 14 2.8 and it was rubbish but then they are known for their variable quality. So if you get one I would recommend either getting one 2nd hand where the owner can provide sample images that are OK or buy from a store will takes returns.

Samyang 14 2.8 also has a higher quality model called XP. I believe they vary less.

Samyang 24 1.4 works. A lot of their fast lenses are quite good in this regard.

Not much else there to compete with them. Irix 15mm F2.4 is a good lens as well. I had one and liked. It also has a click stop at accurate infinity focus.

I wouldn't go slower than F2.8 though. You are already behind with an APSc sensor in terms of light gathering.

Greg.

I recently purchased a Canon 35mm F1.4 LII (I had a serious e-store voucher to burn and it still cost me some buckos )

Seriously, seriously sharp glass.

Their "Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics" moves beyond the hype, into probably the sharpest 35mm available bar none territory, well, at the moment at least.

Sadly, not close to the price point that was asked for.

P.S.
Will post a test report if any are interested.

A useful resource I found today for seeing what lenses work well for nightscapes is lenstip.com.

They do lens reviews and have a coma and astigmatism test. They show what stars look like in the corners. Saves a lot of trouble!

I am interested.

lenstip.com shows the coma as being tiny and one of the best there is. Up there with the Sigma Art 40 1.4 and the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM.

That blue lens is a very clever optical solution to making an APO. I wonder if that tech will ever make its way into telescopes.

Greg.
