Canon camera lenses upgrade ?

Hey guys,

First of all I am a relative beginner in photographing with a DSLR, having owned a canon 550d for about a year now, I bought it body only, and so had to purchase a lens. I got the 15-85mm ef-s lens, which is a great all purpose lens.
However I am feeling like I need more range as well as an ability to take macro shots.

So in terms of budget I suppose I would be willing to spend a maximum of around $500. Also It would be great if the lens is ef not ef-s as I would like to be able to use it on a full-frame when I upgrade.

Lenses which I have been eyeing out are the 100mm macro and the canon 70-300mm telephoto. If you have used these lenses and have any advice, this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you
Orestis

The 70-300mm is very soft, and, usually operates at f/4.5-f/5.6

I'd go the 100mm macro.

Not that I do that much photography , but I have a 70-200mm and just never bother with it, it's big and difficult. 100 mm for sure, macro is cool, you'll use that.

Hi Orestis! I don't own the the 100mm but I have a friend that does, he laments not getting the L Series of that lens. The reason being that the standard series does not have Stability Control and when he's taking macro shots, if the camera is not attached to a tripod its hard to keep it steady. There are some good deals on gumtree for a L Series 100mm between $700 and $900.

Hope that helps

Sorry for the late reply,

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. I figured the 100mm macro would be the better choice. If only I had the funds to purchase the L series of this lens.

thanks again
cheers
