Compact Flash card advice needed

I am looking for a compact flash card for a Canon DSLR. Not sure what capacity I need or what spec - it looks like yoiu can get different read/write speeds. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should look at and where to get it?

Thanks,

Peter

Assuming your DSLR is at least 8 megapixels, I'd get at least a 1Gb card. I use Sandisk Extreme and Ultra cards. If you don't want to spend lots of money, I'd get the second-top speed card. For example, looking at the Ted's website, you can get the latest Sandisk Extreme IV in 2GB for $129.95 (that's currently half price, by the way!) whereas the Ultra II in 2GB is only $79.95 (currently this represents a 20% discount).

The Ultra II isn't as fast as the Extreme, but the camera probably can't even support the higher speed anyway.

See

Cheers

Morton,
Thanks for the advice. I'm looking for a card for a 400D. Is Ted's the place to look?

You can get all types on ebay, for very reasonable prices.

I've got a 1gig card in my 350D, which gives about 100 images in RAW format. For astrophotography, I never use more than that in 1 session because most of the time I download them to the computer immediately anyway.

On holidays, I usually take the laptop with me and transfer them to the laptop each night.

Peter I highly recommend the Sandisk range.
Go for at least the Extreme III but the Extreme IV is even better.
For astro the Extreme III is fine.

I highly recommend these guys:

4GB Extreme III for around $99.

Check out the rest of the range as well.
I buy from them all the time, very happy with the service.

Hi peter, i agree, the Sandisk Extreme IV is the top one, I use a 2 gig one which gives you plenty of space, and very quick download speed, fantastic in any conditions, it loves the cold.

Hi,

MSY is a computer chain and they have a shop in Brisbane. I dont think the speed really matters as you are only talking about a few seconds difference.

Anyway

Generic CF cards,

1G / 2G / 4G / 8G (CF) - $21 / $33 / $56 / $105

8 gig for 105 bucks is pretty cheap

SANDISK

“Genuine” Sandisk CF 1G / 2G / 4G - $28 / $36 / $69

Here is a link to the price list http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

I've had experience with the Brisbane MSY store at Slacks Creek. I got my SPC900-NC there for $89. Just walked in and they got it off the shelf for me

This shop is real, the stuff genuine and in the original unopened packaging.

They just keep the overheads really low. They do have showrooms in several capitals so you can see it before you pay.

I get all my stuff from the Sydney CBD store, never had a problem and they are by far the cheapest shop i have ever seen.

I got the 4gb sandisk for my 400d. Have bought motherboards, ram, disks all at good cheap prices.

The only problem i ever have with MSY is the queue, there is always about 50 people lined up waiting to buy something.

I find my 1 gig sandisk extreme 3 plenty, usually the battery runs out as the card fills up. Once I get another battery I'll also get another c/f card.
