F1's race director Charlie Whiting has died in Melbourne

Sadly Charlie Whiting has died today in Melbourne, after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

He was 66.

The snowy haired Charlie was always the guy we saw in the starter's box
and was the person drivers would be briefed by on safety issues and the
like before each race and would be the person they would refer to during
a race if they had something to report. "I hope Charlie is listening", they would say.

This is so sad, he was an absolute professional. What a shock for his family. I wonder who will replace him in this role for this weekend.

Very unexpected. Charlie was just one of those fixtures in F1 that seemed to just always be there, like Murray Walker.
