Newbie looking to buy 8" or 10" Dobsonian

Hi all,

I'm interested in buying a used 8" or 10" (if it will fit in my hatchback!) dobsonian. Collapsable would be ideal but I'm not too fussed if it's not. I'm in Melbourne.

Cheers!

James have you considered joining ASV and loaning an 8" Dob from them to try it out? I think they charge like $10 per month? Cheers.

G'day John,

Thanks for your message. I got my ASV membership a few days ago and am planning a trip to their dark sky site on a Sat night in 2 weeks time. It will be good to have a look through some different scopes, and enquire about hiring one. The only problem is that I think you have to be a member for 3 months before you can hire a scope and I'm not sure if I can wait that long!

Cheers,

James.

8" dob

James,
About a year ago I bought a 8" GSO dob from Andrews Communications (google) in NSW. I only paid $300 for it but another $90 for a courier to WA. However I love it. And for the price its even better. Compared to the others in ASWA I believe I did well. Instead of moving on teflon it has bearings, a 90 deg finderscope, knobs for collimating the primary mirror instead of needing a n Allen key or screwdriver, (bought Bob's Knobs for the secondary) and a 'vernier' knob on the focuser.
I suppose the price might have gone up since I bought mine but its worth a look.
Good hunting!

G'day Popeye,

Andrew's are doing them for $500 these days and I could get a similar price from Bintel here in Mlebourne. I'm just looking to spend a little less by buying second hand. Would also like to get a 10" if possible. I'll just keep checking every day on here until something comes up.

Cheers,

James.

8"Bintel Dobsonian in Melbourne

Hi, I have a Bintel 8" Dobsonian in Melbourne that I am looking to sell. It is 13 months old and it has only been used twice. It has all the accessories, a silver cover and a collimator. I also have an adjustable chair from Bintel. If you are interested please let me know.
