I would like some advice on a sturdy tripod for a DM4 mount as I am thinking of upgrading

You really have a lot of options there once you work out your total payload.
Options are Steel, timber or Carbon fibre depending on any other uses.
I ended going carbon fibre just because I wanted it for my larger scope & dm6 mount/ camera and small scope for terestrial use. (Strong multi use and light weight)
I keep the leg segments open to only 2 when using for Astro use but has the extra length for terrestrial use.
Went with a gitzo Gt5532Ls

Good luck with your choice

I have the same gitzo tripod on my DM4
http://photovideo.com.au/gitzo-gt553...od-p-8449.html

Its very light and is easy to walk outside one handed (mount tripod combined), my mewlon 180 loaded is probably 8 kgs + its a little tippy on the first leg angle , I guess theres your trade off right there on the light weight ,second leg angle is rock solid ( quite a bit wider ) I view seated and I believe this set up would load up quite a bit more weight wise ,dampening time is a second or so .If you havn't seen one of these tripods they are very solid nothing like the large manfrottos you see in the camera stores
