M78

Another target I've been wanting to have a go at in RGB is this, the APT load screen! M78. It reminds me a bit of corona australis, whispy with darkness.

Had a few goes processing, but turned out that only a light tough was needed to get the balance that I wanted; to show as much as possible, but not lose any stars in the brightest areas. Pauls effort http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...93#post1495693
made me realise what was there to see, and that I had pushed earlier processing way too hard. His image is something I'd like to build up to over the coming months, perhaps from a darker site.

Anyway, in Canberra we've been so starved of decent nights, I felt good to make the most of the past three decent nights. One observing til about 2, the next imaging til 1, and last night going all the way through, but setting alarms to switch targets. I'm happy to be calling it a night now

Your putting in the effort JP, and that's what it takes.

The clouds will clear...one day.

You just have to be ready!

Nice image.

That is really nice JP. That's on the edge of the barnard loop so there is a lot of Ha in the field. Problem is that it is faint. So if your rig can do it try 15min subs at least and lots of them. You already have the colors spot on.

Thanks all!
Marc, i can run 15min subs, but are you think lum or Ha? Lum will be bright mess at any gain. Ha, would you suggest combining it with the R channel?

John,

I ran your image through PI. Lovely detail, but something odd going on - like a frosty frame or bad flat frame?

Plenty of H-a there! And the colours look great, just wondering what is causing this weird alteration in the histogram balancing?

Thanks Lewis, i think it is a result of the autobackground correction i ran on it (first time ever). I did go through each frame with blink, as it was rising through city glow early and got rid of the first hour of data. Maybe i needed to get rid of more? You seen it before?
