DSS - Stacking and HDR

With targets such as M42 there's such a range of light that to capture the core, the outer gases are weak and to capture the outer gases, the core gets blown out.

If I should get different exposures to cover both situations, does something like DSS automatically stack them in a way that creates a HDR or do I need to produce different images and use a HDR program to combine them?
