IMO you'd be better off getting just the body and carefully selecting decent glass as Canon are not renowned for their kit lens, but on the other hand it depends what you want out of it. Check out lens reviews as it can be sometimes hit and miss between models.

Thanks for that Dunk, not something I had considered. I do want to use for normal and astro, so the kit lenses will be put to good use.

Having a look around seems one of the more recommended but not too expensive lenses is the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F/2.8. Now $400 odd is not something to sneeze at so this might have to come later. How useful/less are the kit lenses for nightscapes?

The kit lenses will be relatively "slow" and not particularly well corrected compared to dedicated primes. Night time photography usually takes a back set to day time. But the only way to find out is to try it

Rather than the Sam/Rok 14mm f/2.8, I'd go for the 12mm f/2.0 if it were my $$$...a full stop faster and the lens gets impressively good reviews. Just be aware that either of these are really wide FOV...about 90 degrees or so across.

Cheers Dunk, I had a look at the review 12mm f/2.0 and the reviews are really fantastic, most impressive. I think you may have just swayed me

If you haven't already got one, get yourself an intervalometer or use the USB cable to control from your PC

You basically need to put it in (B)ulb mode at ISO 400/800/1600 and push go
