Canon Lens question

Am off to kangaroo island next weekend and will be taking the 60da for a spot of wide field. The only canon lens I own is a nifty 50 as for daytime this is a Nikon household.

now then, my good lady is renting a 50 to 500 sigma from lens pimp for the trip ( nature freak)and we thought its probably worth me renting something for the Canon to save lugging my 2 cameras around.

my favourite Nikon lens is an 18 to 200 F3.5 Gii ED as its really flexible and has the whole VR thing.

I Have until tomorrow to identify which lens I want as it needs to be ordered in for pick up on Tuesday so for those daytime photographers out there, given the opportunity, what Canon lens would you recommend that would give me similar flexibility and high quality results? If its good n fast for astro that would be a huge plus as the last time I used the nifty I was running on f6.2 to eliminate comma. Worked fine, just not very fast.

That's in advance again

Try a 70-200 L F4,or if budget allows f 2.8 version-either of these are outstanding,the F4 version-much easier to carry around in field,the f 2.8 is much heavier,but amazing bokeh and sharp.

24-105 F/4 L is a joy to use and very versatile, my favorite all-rounder.

I don't know of anything in the canon range with that 18-200 wide zoom range.

Canon have an 18-200, not exactly a quality lens but it does cover the same range.

I'm with Roger on the 24-105, it's my favourite lens.

If I was hiring and only taking one lens, I'd be tempted to try the 28-300 L seres, that would give you a reasonable range from semi wide to Tele and better image quality. If you're after something wider, the 18-135 might fit the bill.

If night widefields are your main aim then it's a whole new ballgame, perhaps the 16-35 F2.8L.

Thanks for tips' much appreciated
I opted for the 24 - 105 and the 18-35

This gives me landscape which I enjoy, leaving wifey to shoot small woodland creatures, and a nice fast wide field lens for astro

Thanks again.

The 24-105 on a crop camera like the 60d is NOT wide angle !
The FOV of the wide end (24mm) is no more than 60 degrees.
The EF-S 15-85 I have is a good one as well (despite no red ring and only 5.6 at the 85mm end), but 3.5 at the 15mm end and an angle of 84º.

I like the 15-85 on my 400D very much and it does cover most day to day uses. It gives the same fov on a crop as the 24-105 on a full frame. It's not quite the same quality as my 70-200 f/4 but it isn't too shabby either. For photographing the tweety birds it's hard to go past the 400 f/5.6.
