David Malin Award Winners & Results

(via John Sarkissian)

Earlier this evening, the winners of this year’s CWAS “David Malin Awards” were announced at a special presentation at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Observatory. A web site of the awards featuring pictures of the evening, will be prepared and posted in the coming days.

For the first time ever, we had joint overall winners. Congratulations to Phil Hart and Peter Ward. Their entries were of such outstanding quality, each in its own genre, that David was not able to split them.

Overall Winners:
This year we had two joint overall winners – the first time ever. They are:

“The Moon in Motion” – Phil Hart (Animations)

Citation: “A beautifully made series of sequences of the 2017 USA solar eclipse, set to suitably mysterious music. This is by far the finest video we have had submitted in the history of this competition, and the processing and presentation completely embraces both aesthetic and scientific realms with aplomb.”

“Stellar Cauldron” – Peter Ward (Deep Sky)

Citation: “This is a vivid and astonishing rendition of the well-known Orion nebula. While it's the vivid red of the ionized hydrogen that catches the eye, the picture also reveals the subtle texture and shading of the dusty regions around and within it. This is one of the finest images of this object that I have ever seen.”

The winner of the Photo Editor’s Choice was:

“Moonbow Magic” – Luke Tscharke (Nightscapes)

Congratulations to the winners. Well deserved. I went out to the dish and saw the display. Beautifully printed and presented and a great opportunity to see printed images of such high quality.

Very kind Alex. I've made up a web page:

Bragging rights here

During the awards night David started with the HST image of M42, which he noted had decidedly higher resolution, but also due to a mix of instruments to capture the data, has inaccurate colours.

As a result I did one of my "roll-overs" on the linked page above....BTW the HST data is down-sampled massively, and really does have many amazing details that my data only hints at.

Thanks to John Sarkissian, all of CWAS, David Malin and Canon for putting on and supporting the event again, and making it a big one for the public this year. Great recognition for the role of The Dish and the Australian Radio Astronomy community in the events of 50 years ago. My partner and I watched the movie in parallel at home on Saturday night - hope everyone there enjoyed it!

My apologies to the organisers that I could not be there. Great to see Luke there to collect his prize for last year - I'll make sure not to engage in any risky sporting activities in three months before July 2020!

Phil

Congratulations Phil (& of course Peter who I congratulated in person already). Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Yes it was a great event this year - thanks to John, David and of course the whole CSIRO team & the volunteers who put on a fabulous weekend.
I only stayed on for the Saturday unfortunately, but it was great to see thousands of visitors all enthusiastic about science.

Press coverage this year has been a bit spotty, but nice to see The Melbourne Age run a short piece on the CWAS awards this weekend.

I cannot take my eyes off this stunning image of M42, Peter. Congrats on your well-deserved award for this visual masterpiece. Simply awesome.

Very kind of you, but it needs to be said once more that the overall prize was given to myself and Phil Hart. While a little hard to play in a newspaper, his eclipse timelapse is superb.
