Which guidecam

My trusty old SPC900NC has started playing up and at the same time I need a more sensitive guidecam to go on my new RC8 with OAG. The other scope is ED80 with a finderguider.

Any recommendations? I have been looking at cameras with the MT9M034M sensor (ASI120MM-S, QHY 5L-IIM) or apparently more sensitive Altair GPCAM1 AR0130 or possibly something like Altair GPCAMv2 130. Getting lost with all different sensors and possibilities.

Looking for something good but cheap-ish, considering the recent expenditure for the RC8. Something good for planetary imaging would be a bonus and may stretch the budget (currently using ASI120MC).

Thanks in advance
Luka

Have a look at the new ASI290Mini Mono, high sensitivity (QE90%). Small tube body, suits OAG by reducing space required.

Thanks Glen.

I am unsure of the ASI USB2.0 cameras after my experience with the ASI120MC. It has a split-frame problem with my Win10 laptop which makes it unusable for guiding. Even Sam (from ZWO) said:
"sometimes, some usb3.0 host may have such compitable problem
this is not a problem of software but hardware
but our usb3.0 cameras should have no such problem"

Anyway, I am not sure if the ASI290Mini Mono would have the same problem with my laptop as it is USB2.0. I have emailed ZWO, let's see what they say.

Got a reply from ZWO:
Quote:
When Sam said that we didn't have mini camera yet. Now, we use our newest technology to design the whole mini series.
ASI290mini won't have such problem, because the PCB is new design and much advanced than 120mm/mc camera. As you know 120mm/mc cannot use ASICAP, but mini camera can do that, just like our USB3.0 cameras.
So basically they said that the new ASI290 mini is a redesign and that it should not have the same compatibility issues as the old ASI120.

Thank you Glen

Yes, I am tempted by that myself. Trouble is then I have to repurpose my ASI 120mc

I am wrestling with that very decision, having both the Mini290 Mono and the 120MM. I believe the Mini will be obvious choice in OAG configuration and the 120MM works fine on the guidescope.

I will probably use my ASI120MC as a planetary camera. Split frames do not matter much for planetary. Not the best as USB2.0 only but good enough for now. Or sell it???
