boosging the sound on a Win 8.1 OS Desktop please

Hi Guys, other than turning everything to 100% and getting not much volume, how can i boost the sound of a Win 8.1 OS Desktop please.

Happy with any suggestions.

I don't want speakers David and only listen through Ear Phones.

With the sound at 100% the volume is poor, and has been with any Computer with a OS after XP, not just my machine.

I thought there maybe some sound card or something one could install, if there is such a thing.

I use Win7 and always listen to music through the headphones, and its very loud to my hears with the speaker volume set at 75%.

Some headphones are more efficient than others. Maybe some main-boards are different in the amount of power the sound amplifier provides.
