Introduction...

Hi,

I have been interested in astronomy for many years as well as software, electronics and radio comms. Radio Astronomy combines those areas nicely. I have built systems to detect extra-galactic neutral hydrogen (H1) line emissions (SMC & LMC)...
http://hawkrao.joataman.net/H1/
...as well as daily observations of the Vela Pulsar...
http://hawkrao.joataman.net/pulsar/index.html

I am interested to know of any AUS/NZ activities in similar areas.

Welcome to the forum Steve. I'm sure you'll find some like minded/similarly interested types here.

Hi Steve,
Welcome

Did you check out the Radio Astronomy Forum here: http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/f...splay.php?f=40

Hi Allan - yes - I did. I think all the posts there are about Spectroscopy [correction: I see now that the default time period is 100 days - changing that to 'Beginning' reveals RA posts]. How, I am a bit puzzled why the section is called "Radio Astronomy and Spectroscopy" and mentions Radio Astronomy, Spectroscopy and Variable Star observations. I would have thought Radio Astronomy would be a separate section as the other two are optical - not radio ?

Good point. Sorry I can't shed any light on that. Probably just developed that way early on.
Sorry I know nothing about Radio Astronomy, strictly a visual observer to date. My experience with Radio Astronomy is having music playing in the background. Sorry.

Hope you find what you are looking for (or should that be "listening for" ?

There are a small number of RA posts buried in among the other non-radio stuff. Last RA post over a year ago I thought I might ask the mods to split out the RA stuff to a separate section - but given my recent arrival to this forum and the small number of post about RA here they may not appreciate it

Actually - it is "looking" as 99% of RA results are graphical.

I hold little hope of finding others engaged in pulsar observation at an amateur level in AUS/NZ. I created and administer an amateur pulsar detection website...
http://neutronstar.joataman.net/
...where you can see there are only small number of amateur pulsars hunters globally. Also note that I am the sole representative in AUS/NZ.

Basically I am hoping to be the first amateur (AFAIK) to detect a 'glitch' from the Vela pulsar - a more ambitious target is to announce it before the big boys (professional astronomers) do - not likely...
Cheers

Steve
