Mars last night 150ED reprocessed.., last reply

Took this picture between 8.30 and 9.00pm last night before mars reached its highest point. This was a 20% stack of 20,000 frames taken with a ASI290 MC through a x2 Meade barlow attached to a SW 150ED. Processed in autostakker, registax and gimp2.
Any suggestions on processing and capture welcome
Regards philip

Nice image Sash, I might have to put that scope on my EAA equipment list.
Can I ask one question, when I zoom in on your Mars image I see an over layer grid pattern, almost like it was shot through a window screen. Do you know what caused that
?

Hi Glen,
Not sure, may be due to the lower resolution 34kb jpeg I used? Perhaps someone else would know.

Very good result Philip.

The checkerbox pattern is most likely caused by the wavelet sharpening in Registax being a little too high - you might need to up the denoise level a bit.

You could also try using the 1.5x drizzle mode in AS!3 to increase the final image size - it's a pretty easy way to increase the size of the image without too many artefacts appearing. Note that with a larger image size, you will also need to increase the sharpening values in Registax accordingly.

Hi Philip, this is a really excellent result for the aperture. Did you use a UV/IR cut filter? This should help for the colour camera. Colour balance looks a bit red just now, may be worth adjusting a little?

One thing you did get as well is the developing dust storm in Mariner Valley, which has been prominent in a few images over the last couple of days, well done!

I'm pretty sure the grid is a Registax sharpening artefact - can be cleared with a 'despeckle' or other noise reduction process

Very good. You can really see the dust from the storms.
