NYE fireworks to be replaced by LED drones ?

In the SMH I read an interesting article:
https://www.smh.com.au/national/dron...15-p5413w.html
I think it is a good idea, less pollution and fire hazard and in the sense of light pollution it is not a big deal, because they only light up the sky for at most one hour a year.
What do you think ?

If true,it would save a **** load money in the long run.
Fireworks cost millions of dollars a year. which go up in smoke.
Burning money in my opinion.
Cheers

The money is still there, just in someone else's pocket.

I don't think so - money was converted into pyrotechnical material that went in smoke..

Nothing really useful was created in this transaction.

Fireworks are a wonderful "good" (as in goods and services) for the economy.

Instant consumption and no second hand market.

I think we need drones that carry fireworks so as to provide a greater show than the year before and totally indulge the city folk who keep the world going.

Would definately be cool to see...

Intel -2015
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOd4-T_p5fA(look closely, there's a scene from the Sydney display)

Intel - 2018
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwQ31-vSgfs (2000 Drones)

Late edit: Wonder is what kind of wind these could fly in? ... would be a shame to cancel any event due to "light winds"

I love the fireworks. Drones are nice too but simply don't have multi sensory impact but I'm sure the ABC won't stop bleating until they get what they want.

This. Multi sensory is the thing. I love the smell of gunpowder in the evening.

I can however appreciate the painful issue of city folk playing with fire whilst everyone else burned (as in earlier this year).

There will always be complaints regarding "visual entertainment" from some vector. Fireworks, Drones, Lasers, etc. This forum has held many rants on each of these.

The Foti Bros will have a different view on that I'm sure.
And don't get me started on transactions that don't create anything useful. That would turn into a cadenced drone and this forum would explode.

Maybe a new challenge for them, and even make a transition (i.e. combination of fireworks and laser drones ?). Is Foti not an Italian company with a long history of the fireworks ?
And ... drones are a lot cheaper: Foti employees shoud not make dangerous and acrobatic moves for months to install the explosives in the Harbor Bridge, but rather program drone software which spectacle to show (the current fireworks are also computer controlled).

You can go on the merry go round. The wooden horses go up and down a bit, it's safe, a little fun but rather repetitive. Or you can go on the roller coaster. After the slow climb to the top, you experience a rush, g-force, might even bash your knee or rattle your teeth.

But what a ride!

Drone displays? Really? I guess some bugs are attracted to the pretty lights...

Sooo boring. Sooo vanilla. I much prefer the espresso affogato!!

Many things in life are costly with no real purpose, apart from the sheer enjoyment of the spectacle. Given Australia's obsession with grand-finals sport, clearly many think the same.

The fireworks are just that Fire! Works! A ripper brilliant display that I for one would not want to be watered down due some obtuse PC rubbish.

Look at military jet displays during airshows.
How tame they now are, since there's nothing to equal the F-111 dump and burn.
The best they have now is a Hercules doing a flare drop. Doesn't come close to making the excitement that the F-111's did.
Replacing fireworks with drone displays, same removing of something visceral.

Me too.

I have fond memories of "cracker night" when I was a kid in the 1960's and a huge bonfire in the back yard.

As a kid that was easily my favourite day of the year. We always had an adult letting off the fireworks in a safe manner, with a long touch wick in a sand pit. We would have 2 hoses and a several buckets of water close at hand, if needed. We never ever needed the water, but it was close if we did. Unfortunately, not everyone exercised the same common sense and caution and there were many serious injuries ultimately resulting in fireworks being banned to the general public. Again the few idiots spoil things for the majority.

Cheers
