Jupiter attempts

I've been trying planetary imaging with Jupiter reaching it's optimal distance. I never seem to get much detail with planets and I dont know why.

Edge8, 3x barlow, ASI120 MC
27.6ms shutter, 90s vid length, gain 70
Autostakkert 2.0, 500 frames stacked, AP size 104, close to edge.

Im hoping to get a decent image of the red spot soon, so any criticism is welcome.

Nothing wrong with that image just needs to be sharpened up a bit.Do you use Registax 6 ?
I take a minimum of 1500 frames for planets, maybe 500 is not enough for Autostakkert to give you a good quality graph across the board , some guys take 2000 to 4000 frames
At least it’s a nice clean image , I imaged Jupiter last night up at 70 deg down at my weekender ( dark site ) and can’t get rid of the darn blue tinge on the edge of the planet. I thought it would only occur at lower altitudes but it’s happening up high too ( suppose to be atmospheric dispersion ?? )
Good work !!

Yes, registax 6 was used for wavelets.
Dyadic, Gaussian settings
I have a stacked image of 1000 frames of the same file but it appeared to have less detail when comparing them side by side with the same wavelet profile. I might try increase the wavelet sharpening to coax out more details on the 1000 frame later today and maybe reprocess the AVI and stack 1500 frames (although I only got 3200 total over 90s)
Thank you very much

tutorial you must see

Hi Nathan,
Have a look at this youtube and Christpher Go's homepage. Theres a lot of useful info.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MeZhlV7p_Y
One thing he advocates is high gain for poor seeing.

I believe that 50fps is a sweetspot for Jupiter , and that there is too much cloud surface movement for videos over 90 seconds and that WinJupos can add what may be crucial derotation.

Follow Niall MacNeill on Astrobin and you'll pick up hints.

Do you use the Sky and Telescope things for GRS and Moons?

Thanks for data on Autostakkert settings / use. I'm not getting anywhere with it...

Good luck
GlennB

Thanks for that info Glenn, I'll check that video out now and have a gander at Niall's astrobin later.
Seeing appears to be a little better tonight and now the collimation is closer. The raw data as im capturing it seems clearer than it was last attempt despite shooting over rooftops.

50fps is about 20ms, which just happens to be the exposure I chose tonight with 75 gain and around 70% histogram.
2 min captures tonight. The AVI lengths can always be cropped down.
I do not use sky and telescope resources, every website and program I used saying when the red spot would transit tonight gave me different figures so I just set up and took a look at it knowing it would be sometime tonight haha.
Thankyou again!

Got my collimation a bit closer last night and managed to get a bit more detail despite shooting over rooftops. Here is an edited file at random, might go through the others and see if I can get a better one, or make a Gif of it rotating?

3x barlow with ASI 120 MC
1250 frames stacked of 6185 captured
2min AVI duration
19.39ms shutter time
75% gain
around 70-80 on histogram while recording (log file says 78%)
Sensor temp 15.5*c no calibration files
Autostakkert 2, Ap size 104

Yes that image looks better. I wonder can you capture in a smaller FOV and get a larger number of frames? Depending on seeing I am sure that might help. While I did pretty well with the ASI120 and my EXT 105 Mak last, this year for what ever reason I was not getting very good results with it and the C6 (the images tended to look a little pixellated and like they were taken through a frosted glass window..and this was not due to dew) and so after fiddling with lots of things I eventually moved to the ASI 1224. With the AS1224 I was able to capture over 20,000 frames with short exposures (whether that is a good thing may depend on your seeing) which is much larger number of frames than I was getting with the other camera and whether in AS3 I take 20 or 50% of the ASI 1224 stack the results look better.

Might be able to capture 20px less in both dimensions, but honestly i think im limited a bit by the 7 y/o dual core laptop with a cheap hdd.
I've batch processed my images and will go through them and pick the best to edit individually. Until then here is a GIF

Congrats AB. You are now really pulling out some good detail from these lucky images. I think I like the second of your most recent images the best if I had to vote for one.

These are very good. Better than anything I've taken.
