Maybe you have a problem with your decision making process Eric. Maybe spend a bit more the first time and get what you really want instead of trying to save money by getting what you can just afford - but wishing for the next model up. I think everyone here suffers from this - it's called a budget

What's next Eric? You must have some idea - you don't sell a camera without plans to purchase its replacement! Otherwise every clear night you'll be wishing you had it back!

Are you going a 40DH? SXF-M25C?

Hi,

I reckon if you are going to get it cooled then go for the 40D. The cooling takes away the advantage of the small size of the 450D, the 40D is far more robust and you would think being a pro would be a better camera.

Erick, Just imagine what you could do with a cooled, modded 40D. That may be enough camera for you for years.

I highly doubt it. Seeing his past purchases, he'll probably keep the 40D for at most a year, then buy something else.

I can only think the way for you to go is going to be narrow band with a mono, cooled CCD...which one I have no idea.

Thanks for your input guys but i seriously dont know what to get .

My opinions (i remember saying this when i first sold the 300d to Alchemy which was only a few months ago) based on how deep my pocket is which is veryyy shallow, is:

- 40D + 17-85mm IS lense brand new $1330 (friend works at canon)
- 20DA $1300 ish
- Meade DSI III

or go all out and get a CentralDS Cooled 40D !! gee'ss i want it i want itt! but i dont think Yun will sell me one for $1300.

Eric, a 20DA is surely a step backwards from the modded 350 - less Ha sensitivity, likewise the 40D (but you get better usability features and lower noise). I can only think you must go to a cooled system of some sort to get better results, I think narrow band is the other way maybe the DSI III + filters I do not know the beast but if your budget is tight how about those QHY cameras....

http://qhyccd.com/QHY8.html

BTW if the modded 350 sale falls through let me know - after trying to image ic2944 I have seen the light - or lack of it - now I want a modded camera. Currently hanging out for the 450...

thanks John, yes a 20DA will mean going backwards from the modded 350D, but how about a modded 20D? yes the chip is very similiar to the 350D but the 20D definitely has more features and less noise with a slightly bigger sesnor (20d = 8.2mpixel 350d =8.0 mpixel). hmmmm . a modded 40D or one of those centralds cameras is the way to go but im really stuck on my budget. I have seen excellent images coming out of those QHY8's but they are still quite pricey. DSI III yes and no. DSI III havent really heard enough from them and have seen images, not as good as i had expected..

sorry , 350d is gone

Modded 20D, for all the reasons you already know. OR........ completely dedicated and cooled CCD (like the ST2000XCM). Not that I am any expert, but I have tried a few, LOL.

QHY8 at 6 meg, cooled and very low noise, and at my current ambient temperatures of 39C, it looks the go. Certainly cheaper than a modded, cooled Canon 40D. And no dark frames. Same chip as the Starlight Express SXVF-M25C. If only I had the money and expertise to use it.

Eric,
Did I get this right? "(friend works at Canon)"

THAT got my attention !!!!!

On the other hand.... "a 20DA will mean going backwards"
I am not listening to this...LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA !

There's definitely madness in the air...must be from having spent so many months without proper imaging, probably left some kind of residual cortical damage on us all...

PS, just to pour a bit of salt on the wound...Eric, you now have to edit your signature and remove the camera from the inventory...I know, I know, its hard but you'll have to do it sooner or later...in the meantime there's nothing wrong with sketching what you see through the eyepiece.

Hi,

I nearly got the QHY8 but got the SBIG 2000XCM instead, for the following reasons

(1) Second hand one was cheaper than the QHY8, good reason
(2) SBIG has a good name, not so good reason
(3) SBIG are known to be reliable, reasonable reason
(4) Fixed cooling so can easily take a library of darks for later use, excellent reason, but qhy8 is supposed to be pretty well noise free so maybe not relevant.
(5) No flex due to 2nd guidescope, irrelevant at short FL, but very relevant at long FL.

I also figured that if people are buying DSI III's for 1600 AUD then a ST2K at 2100 AUD which has more pixels, self guiding and fixed cooling was an absolute bargain.

Still I am finding it hard to focus and havnt turned out any images I am happy with yet. The QHY8 has 6 megapixels which is a real bonus, I am a bit unhappy with the 2 megapixels of the SBIG but will give it a decent try to get some good images as I know it is possible.

From all I have read, the QHY8 in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing gives fantastic results and I dont think you would be dissapointed.

Apologies to Gamma but, I have a friend in China and asked her to email Qui direct. He said for Chinese astronomers only (native i mean), pickup only in Beijing, Qui does the QHY8 for around 1100 AUD eqivalent. If you have a freind local to Beijing this may be a possibility.

I guess if SBIG did a 6 megapixel camera for the same price as the QHY8 we would not be having this discussion, but they dont
