currently Im wishing for some luck in the $20m draw this weekend... If I win, an observatory somewhere so dark it absorbs blackness, a 24" RC and maybe a custom built CCD imager... Oh, and a tin shed near by for me to live in if someone will chip in a few $$. I doubt I'll have enough cash left....

Hi Alex!
One investment which is always forgotten or underestimated is:

a book about astronomical image processing, the time to read and understand it, software for astronomical image processing and somebody
who guides you with the first steps about imaging technics and processing.
Without that you can invest in HW as much as you want - no success!

Get in the nearest astroclub a guy who produces good images - he should
give you the lights, darks, bias, flats and the final image and some hints how to make it..

When you are able to make out of the raws nearly the same endresult
you are ready for thinking about "which hardware?".... (2009...)

Just a hint out of my experience having started also the wrong way.

Alex

You may need a couple or a few filters.

If you're going to image with your newt then :

Baader MPCC is a must as already mentioned, buy the kit if you want to use it for visual as well .... ( $299 MyAstroShop ... $247 MPCC alone )

Baader 2" UV/IR cuts through the cosmic haze .... ( $150 MyAstroShop)

Hutech 2" IDAS LPS2 cuts out through the terrestrial haze .... ( US$200 - AUD$212 delivered from Hutech in US )

All up they will cost you around $600-650 depending on who you buy them from including shipping.

I've quoted what they cost me and who I bought them from.
