Canon 40D and ImagesPlus

My version of ImagesPlus doesn't appear to support the Canon 40D.

I think I have v3.0.

With the USB and long-exposure control cable connected, the Camera Control software has 20D, 350D, 30D.. etc, but not 40D.

And when I click "Connect" to connect the camera, it gives a "function handle error".

Do I need an upgrade of ImagesPlus?

Thanks for your help.

hmm, thanks Lester.

I wonder if I installed an old version of Camera Control and a new version of Images Plus.

The camera control doesn't have a version listed when I do help->about.

The Images Plus processing software is definitely v3.0.

I'll have a look through my CD's tomorrow.

Mike go back version 3 is of no benefit, stay with 2.8 and stay there, 3 has problems, yet to be sorted. trust me I've been there

Hi Mike

You can also use the Canon supplied software “EOS Utility” to control the 40D from a computer. You get the “Remote Live View” and Interval Shooting although the maximum exposure is 30 secs only. If you want longer on Bulb Mode, you need to manually fire these off.

With EOS Utility all you need is the Canon supplied USB cable and preferably, a mains adapter as I found the battery runs down quite quickly!

Cheers

Dennis,

The maximum exposure (greater than 30 seconds) can be set in the interval shooting.

Hi Humayum

Going from memory here, last time I tried to use EOS Utility with the 40D in Manual Mode, when I set the exposure time to B for Bulb, the Interval Icon became “greyed out” and unavailable.

I’ll definitely have another look later to check this out.

Oh and whilst we’re on this topic, has anyone discovered how to set the Mirror Lock Up permanently during interval shooting? When I shoot intervals, the mirror flips up for each exposure and flops back down after the exposure whilst taking the in camera dark?

Cheers

Dennis

Hi Mike

Sounds like you are using the older Canon camera control version.

There is a newer version of the camera control software that runs the newer Canon and Nikon cameras, came out from Version 3.75 from memory.

If you want to run the 350D you need the older version and the 40D you need the newer version, something to do with the SDK's being different I believe.

Cheers

Yeh I think you're right, John - as before, I only needed the 350D version. Now I don't own a 350D and need the 40D version!

I haven't got IP 3.75 - is it a free upgrade?

Dennis/H, I did connect using the EOS utility and it worked. I can see it being useful in some cases. The live view focusing was very cool.

Dennis,

That's odd!

I set the camera physically to M mode, set the ISO, and any other settings, then set the EOS Utility to Bulb. Next, I click the interval timer shooting button, set my exposure details and away I go.

Also, Dennis, unfortunately mirror lockup hasn't been implemented on the DIGIC III/IV via USB. Apparently it isn't possible.

Mike, yeah, if I could I'd stick entirely with the EOS Utility, but, I am pleased with the dithering capability that Nebulosity and PHD Guiding offers.

I read yesterday that someone had written a dithering utility which talks with EOS Utility. Might have to check it out.

Thanks H – Naah, it’s me who’s odd! LOL!

I was going from memory, so I could not be certain of exactly what mode I was in and what settings I had made, so I may be “remembering” a different configuration. So many cameras, so many camera control applications…sigh…

Cheers

Mike

I use ImagesPlus with my 40D no problem.. but the software versions are getting a little complicated..

I have V 3.75 for Image Processing but the Camera Control application is separate.

There is a legacy Version 2 of Camera Control which is the only option for older cameras (eg 20D) and I'm using Version 3.75 for newer cameras including my 40D.

Thanks Phil - that's what I've eventually worked out too.

I had the older version.
