Use your Dog to align your mount

I had to laugh at this serious research study, which was looking at human ability to detect magnetic lines of force. While some humans can subconsciously detect shifts in magnetic fields, it was the statement about dogs which was fascinating. It seems the family pet orients itself along the north/south lines of force when it does a poo!
So if you have lost your compass just setup your mount to align with the direction your Dog faces when doing it's business (allowing for doggy declination of course).

What do they know that we do not?
I miss having my dogs more than I can explain but with this travelling up and down the coast I cant have any...best time of my life was up in the hills with three gods.

Well dogs (ancestors like Wolves) in the wild do have territories, so maybe the magnetic lines of force come in handy for marking out your boundaries.

Alex, i agree, i miss my old Lab, who had to be put down due to cancer last year. It was his second tumor and I could not stand to see him suffer. He made it to 12yo which is pretty good span for the breed. I won't (can't) get another, knowing at my age I could not lift him or restrain him on a leash, and besides it would not be the same dog. He travelled everywhere with me, up to Cape Tribulation, down the Darling River, etc.

I'll keep a watch on my pup when I take him for a walk today.

I'll let you know if it is Magnetic or True...

Well if that’s true, there must be an ongoing weird and random alignment of the magnetic lines over my block of dirt. Obviously the magnetic lines are also completely absorbed by the patches of prickly weeds on the block, so the dogs can’t find anywhere to poo on those patches.

....couple things....

1.) why north-south? ( i'd believe an individual doggo migh always try to poop facing the same direction but n/s seems a bit arbitrary)
3.) how are all doggy compasses calibrated the same? (actually the "circling the area before pooping might be the calibration procedure, much like on a mobile phone)
4.) could you confuse feydeux by putting a magnet on his collar?
5.) how come it took until 2014 for scientists to notice?

I don’t have a dog but I asked a guy at work who does. His reply was that when his dog does a poo it is always looking right at him. He is now going to take note and get back to me. His reasoning was dog pack mentality, always face your enemy!

Funny post Glen, Cheers.

Dogs do line up to n/s when they need to go.
They use the "Dog star" to get their orientation (yes I'm Sirius, because of its associated pup).
This can be verified by using the shadow cast by said excrement at local solar noon.

Perhaps a dog's poo magnetic alignment is disturbed by its owners observation, (ie the Observer Effect). Left to their own devices dogs may default to their magnetic compass. There is a whole new line of enquiry here. How do you observe the dog's alignment without being present? The author of the article does not explain how magnetic alignment was determined. A great PHD thesis awaits some aspiring candidate.
