Through terribly smokey skies, I managed to capture three frames of the NEO flyby this evening. The smoke was so bad that Spica - just near Jupiter - was virtually extinguished.
This NEO is calculated (by NASA / JPL) to be between 650 metres and 1.4 km in diameter, travelling at over 33 km/sec, and passed by the Earth at about 4.57 times the distance from Earth to the Moon. An impact with the Earth would be more than just a splash in the pan....
In the animation, the distance between the NEO in successive frames is about 460 km.
