Nonsense. The US government cannot control tax collection in any other country outside the US, including Australia.
Trump thinks he controls the world, but that is not the case.
The only thing is that, due to the trade war ignited by Trump, will result in higher import taxes, but that depends on whether the AU government is going to retaliate on this. Even in the EU it is not sure. China is the main target.
On the other hand, it would be more fair when a consumer pays sales tax in the country where he buys the product, rather than where he lives. That will result in no duty free at airports anymore, but imports of goods are not taxed anymore as they are taxed in the country where one buys the product. This will eliminate much tax evasion as well.
