'L' Brackets and flash holders.

I just ordered a Canon OC-3 cable to with my flash.David Trap gave me

a 'L' bracket I can attach my flash to.It looks a good quality one.

I was just wondering if anyone has a link to a retailer of these 'L' brackets

and similar bits.I think Troypiggo gave a link to one last time I asked about them.

The one I currently have will get me started, but I have seen the odd pic of ones that can be changed when camera held different ways, and flash can be tilted etc,

Also, would like to look at some bits, and make up something like Dennis's macro set up.

Thanks for any pointers and advice on where to find these things.

Cheers Chris

I'll second that: http://reallyrightstuff.com

I have one of their L-brackets, some panorama hardware and a really nice off-the-camera flash bracket.

Cheers,
Rick.

Chris, you might need to clarify what you want this bracket for. You're saying L brackets but it sounds like you mean/want flash brackets. They could be different things. For example the RRS L bracket would not really be suitable to mount flash by itself. I agree RRS is beautiful gear.

You might also need to clarify what you want to shoot if it's a flash bracket. Portrait flash brackets aren't always the best for macro shooting.

For portrait you want the flash head above the lens in both portrait and landscape orientation of the camera. Eg flip type brackets.

For macro I like the flash head very close to the subject at the end of the lens. You don't get redeye with bugs so this isn't a problem. For humans you need the flash off the optical path to avoid redeye.

Hope that makes sense. Typing this on iPhone

Btw I just received a cheap eBay flash bracket I want to test for macro. About $10. Looks good will be posting results over xmas break.

re bracket.

Thanks Humayan,Rick,and Troy.

I will checkout that link Rick.

Troy-I want something that I can use for portrait photography,I have been reading lots of books about it lately-and the authors all say,to get that flash off camera.

The books show a few small images of the 'flip'style ones you mention Troy.

The secondary interest for various flash brackets is for macro work, something
like Dennis has made up,going by his results, would be very handy.

Interested in hearing how you Christmas experiment goes with new equipment Troy.

I have some funding that has become available from earnings from a photograph I took this year,so do not mind spending a fair amount of money on these things.I feel the items would get a lot more use than astronomy gear-my interest is wanning in that area of photography.

Cheers Chris

"Getting your flash off camera" could also be referring to remote flash using wireless triggers? That's a whole 'nother ballgame.

This looks good Troy, not sure if it could be used for macro use.But I mainly want it for portrait work.

Not sure if I need to get another bit for this, but I think its a package deal that should all fit onto camera.

Cheers Chris

LOL - by pure coincidence, that's very similar to the ebay cheapie bracket I was talking about testing over Xmas. Here's the bracket and swivel head I got, and I'll be testing out some diffusion for the flash itself over the break:

re brackets

Yes,Troy-the first link of yours-certainly looks similar to the 'Right Stuff' one,BIG difference in price!!!!

The vendor has some interesting items, that may be useful,-the tripod set up for $134-fair bit on the postage though-$67.A bi-pod for the rifle looks interesting for $24.

The second link, the swivel head for $5.plus $5 postage, looks interesting.

I will be certainly very interested in how the items go for you Troy,I will hold off ordering them, till then.

Could you post some photos of the kit on your camera etc,

Thanks Chris

If you really want to go silly have a look at Kirks Enterprises, they are in the States, but my orders were here in 4 days, even quicker than Australian post.

Chris, just got back from a bit of a test session with that bracket and ballhead. I would not recommend getting them. The connections are too loose and don't hold the flash rigidly enough. Keeps spinning around the joints. I'm sure there's a way to modify it to tighten them up, but I can't recommend buying it to anyone.
