80mm Orion short refractor

Are the Orion 80mm short refractor guide scopes any good for taken deep sky images? or the moon and planets?.

Cheers John.

Hi Nino, its probably ok for taking some moon pics, but there would not be enough magnification to get too much in the way of planets. As for deep space you would have to deal with bright pink and blue halo's around the brighter stars ie CA or chromatic aberration where the colours won't focus in the same spot. If you can find an object without many bright stars the results can be ok. Here are couple of pics taken with an achromatic scope, the lower the f ratio the worse the CA gets.

I actually did some moon pics over Easter with mine and my mono guide cam. Worked OK, nothing spectacular but not a bad way to utilise gear. I will have to check what else I took that weekend and see if I have anything interesting!!

I had posted my moonage here http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=155876 which was taken with an Orion ST80, Oriion SSAG Pro Guidecam and all mounted on an Orion Atlas AZEQ-G. Worked OK
