Nikon Lens + CCD Combo

Helloooo,

On my way today to pick up a Nikon 180mm for widefields combined with my other primes, I'm very keen on trying widefields with my QHY9M + FW. I have enough backfocus including using my OAG (Should make for one epic-looking setup!).

My question is what’s the best method to secure such a setup to a mount (Specifically, a NEQ6)? The Geoptik adapter from TS (Here) adds 19mm to the optical path which makes it too long, plus I think $130AUD is a bit of a rip off. I'm considering buying guiderings but might be hassle if I use a short lens i.e. thrifty-fifty or the likes. I'd probably have to have use one guide ring on the lens, and the other on the body of the QHY9 (Which has an OD of 109.5mm, and the lens will have anywhere between 50-80mm, so might have to end up using two different sized rings). I'd like to avoid having to mount it to my telescope since the only one I have is a RC8 and a bit overkill to have to balance that up just for widefields.

I tried searching the site but couldn't find much, so please do forgive me if this topic has already been covered What do you guys and gals think?

I've just connected my Nikon lens to a QHY10 camera using the adapter sold by Theo of Gama Electronics. Highly recommended.
I use a separate set of rings to attach to my scope and can do a narrow and widefield at the same time.

Hey Allan,

Yup I've got the adapter to connect my Nikon lens to the QHY9. It's just the mounting to my mount that I'm contemplating. Are the rings the ones with a finderscope/vixen adapter on the underside? If you an image of it mounted on, that would be awesome!

Well, it's official. There is absolutely no way I can get any of my Nikon lenses to come to infinity focus with my FW in place. Even without the OAG the smallest backfocus i can get is ~50mm, 5mm too long and *so close* but not enough. So might just consider a small (< 70mm) refractor, unless if anyone else has managed to get a Mono + FW combo working!

**Edit**
It appears it is possible - http://ukastroimaging.co.uk/forums/i...?topic=54566.0
I suppose I need much thinner adapters. Hmmm

I have a Nikon 180 F2.8 ED. I was thinking of getting the FLI nikon adapter. I normally use Pentax 67 lenses because of this backfocus issue. They have 89mm of backfocus making them easy to use.

I did use a 180 ED in the past on an SBIG STL11 successfully.
Can you get thinner adapters?

Greg.

I can get focus with my QSI583, but I had to buy the WS cover, rather than the WSG (with off axis guiding) because of the 46.5mm back focus of a Nikon lens.

I'd probably use a guide ring on the lens if I were using a longer prime. I'm not sure it would be necessary if using a 50mm lens. Still to build my planned bracket to support the camera properly. Will post a photo in due course.

Ah sorry for the late reply guys, IIS didn't send me notifications of replies!

Greg,
Mmm I was considering a pentax 67 but since I have a Nikon DSLR I was hoping I'd be able to get away with the 180mm. I think the issue is the adapters; I need some super thin ones and then it might work. But all up that's still 15mm I need to shave off. However I think I might have to give this project a miss this time, far too busy getting my RC8 setup up to speed. It's only seen an hour of starlight!

David,
Ah that sucks! If you could have kept the WSG cover then you could have used an OAG. Yea I was planning on making a wooden support bracket for the QHY9, and then get a single guidering for the lenses. Probably not required for the 50mm but more for peace of mind. Yes please do send pics once you're done!

Not really an issue. This imaging rig rides on atop my 102mm Takahashi which becomes my guidescope. A bit of overkill, but the the resulting images were pretty good.

Link to previous thread. There is a photo of the temporary setup to prove everything worked.

I remember looking at that picture, one of the few that really inspired me to take this path Haha overkill but is there really any other way?

Anyways thanks a lot guys for all your help and advice. I've decided to sell it (Ad's up now), I have plenty of other lenses to play around with to get it working and rather use the money towards the RC8. Probably end up buying this awesome lens back from whoever I sell it to me thinks!

Does anyone know of a way to combine QHY9/Starlight Xpress FW with a Nikon 180ED?

Hammer and glue.

Seriously thought the F-mount backfocus distance is 46.5mm, the starlight express fw is 29mm and the QHY9 is 15mm.

Whatever solution you put in place can't be more than 2.5mm thick which I think rules out any machined adapters.

Another option, albeit a manual one, is a filter drawer, NOT wheel. From memory the drawers soak up about 15mm of back-focus.

Nikon lenses have 48.5mm flange distance. So that's the point from the back of the lens flange to the focal point and that's the distance your adapters+ filter wheel+ depth of CCD inside body has to match.

Mmm I think there's a company which makes really thin adapters (2mm), I read it somewhere on the net. I'll see if I can dig it up. Otherwise as gbeal mentioned, filterdrawer is the best way to go.
Dimitris, you need a nikon flange to M42/M48 adapter. Like this:

I got mine from QHY for something like $40
