Alternative to Windows Photo Viewer

After a windows update yesterday on windows 10 , I lost access to windows photo viewer so couldn’t open my photos. The update must have updated photo viewer and parked the existing version in the system somewhere but you can’t access it unless you do a complete re install of win 10
My son came over and went into the computers registry and got me up and running with a work around
We had to register each type of image file jpeg, tiff, Cr , png etc...so now I can access my images and work on them

Can anyone advise a good alternative to windows photo viewer ( freeware or other ) to open your image files

Thanks in advance

Hi,
While I am not too sure about WIN10, (I don't run it.) so just try them out?
1/. Xnview > https://www.xnview.com/en/xnview/
According to their Specs...Both of these work on WIN10.

2/. WildBit viewer > http://www.wildbit-soft.fi/software.html
Lotsa features on both.

I'm sure that other people will post more optional programs, but these are just 2 that I use.

I've been using ACDSee Classic from WinXP, works fine on Win7.

As a pro photographer who shoots thousands at events there is just one

https://www.faststone.org/

There is almost nothing it won't do that a working photographer needs, I shoot for a glossy car magazine and when I come back this is whet I turn to, and it is free

FSViewr70 looks very promising, thank you Jeremy for link.
It even opens Canon CR2 files.. And DSS Autosave as well!

As an alternative to general win viewer, I am using Paint Shop Pro, evaluation version - old but gold!
And if you are Canon camera user, DPP is excellent - I am using it as viewer and for curves adjustment (after DSS processing). It comes with any Canon camera purchase.

Thanks All
Should have mentioned I’m using a Canon 600D which is set to provide jpegs and raw ( Cr ) files
I use the jpegs to visually check the images then
I use the raw (Cr ) images to load them into Deep Sky Stacker to stack , then the stacked image is saved as fts file ready for post processing in Startools
The final image is saved as a jpeg or tiff or png file

That’s all I do nothing else

I don’t work on jpegs or any of the others

Cheers

In that case, try to use DPP (Digital Photo Professional), Canon's own software. As I mentioned earlier, it is great for curve adjustment (see post #37).
In case you lost the original installation CD, you can download it from Canon website, but you also need to adjustregistry to let installer know it is not the first installation, see here for details.

I’m not keen on hacking the registry again

This is not hack.. it is what DPP writes in registry when installed first time.
You should have original CD, it comes with Canon each camera purchase.

Bought the camera for my wife as a birthday present about 9 years ago , can’t even find the original box it came in
I’m putting it use after lying dormant for 5 years when I started AP

If you do not want to add registry entry yourself, perhaps you contact Canon and provide them with serial number, they may help you with CD?

Thanks Luka
Sorry to ask questions
Should I download the 32bit or 64bit version on my Windows 10 home ?
I work on and view the following files Raw (Cr) , JPEG, jpg , tif, and png
I noticed a link for the app to Microsoft but I want to avoid this

Cheers

Martin, go with the 64bit version if your Windows is 64bit (very likely, check in Control Panel -> System).

And don't forget to install the plugins!!!

Thanks Luka
I mentioned Irfanview to my son who has been in IT for 15 years and used it a number of years ago
He’s given me a big tick to use it as a photo viewer for AP
Thanks to all who provided advice
Cheers
