My guess is that it's a shadow of a moon.

Please give some details of when the shot was taken etc
People then may be able to help pin it down.
Cheers

If it is the evening of the 28/4 then I saw it too There is a second one towards the right on the limb. I was observing with a 25cm Newt at 205x which was optimal for the seeing conditions that evening. I saw it as a dark cloud formation or festoon in the making. It was more circular than elongated with a hint of a swirl pattern.

The disturbances in this region of Jupiter are well documented in historical visual observations in the past 150 years and they even appear in the JupiterMoons app (Sky and Telescope). The clouds are always changing shape and often colour and contrast changes too. Jupiter is a most fascinating planet to observe.

I have been watching that dark swirl develop for some time, both in the 5" and the 18", there are also other very distinct features.

I have observed it with regularity in my 102mm refractor.

it was VERY distinct in Matt's 130mm on the 27th of April.

It is most assuredly a cloud storm/festoon formation, and not a lunar shadow.

Or a large alien mothership

The dark spots have been there for a while, http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...d.php?t=155848
As far I know, they are storm systems with different chemical compositions, but others may know more.
