Rug up Canberrans!

It's going down to 0° overnight, with frosts in the morning. Not bad for Autumn

We expat QLD'ers aren't equipped for the cold...might have to start a camp fire.

Yes Lewis I have heard it will be very chilly, talked to my daughter in Ballarat as well today and it is about 6-7 and possible hail with lots of heavy wind.

Oh i do feel for them from Yeppoon.

yes - for those that belong to the "Freezer Suit Club", it is time to get them out and run them through the washing machine to freshen them up for the coming season.

I think it is going to be a cold one.

I wish the cold would also break all the lights around me as well. A neighbour a couple of yards over had a great spotlight in their backyard for half the night.

Welcome to Canberra.

I can't wait for extreme cold. My favourite time of year.

Sounds like the words of a fair-weather QLDer to me

It drops below freezing with some frequency in winter once you get away from the coast...

Got down to -1.4° here. Not that I noticed - the seeing was so steady and crisp, I was warm in my observing!

And now my nose hasn't stopped running

When I took Miss 8 to school this morning, it was 2.2° with wind chill factoring. She was mortified poor thing, having never been below 12° in her life. I told her to wait till her birthday in August, when we MAY be able to play in the snow in the front yard

Why, if you don't have to?

I'm like Humayun - LOVE the cold. When I was in -36° with my wife once and she was cold, I gave her my jacket, leaving me in a skivvy...I didn't even really mind!

Extreme cold in Canberra? No disrespect intended, but it's all relative to your frame of reference. Having spent 30 years in Canada, in northern Alberta and Ontario, I can assure you, with that frame of reference, it does not get cold in Canberra. I grew up with guys that would be walking around in t-shirts in what passes for a Canberra winter.

During a trip to Moscow some years back, we went from +40° in Aus, to -40° - that was a little bit of a shock to the temperate ecosystem

Was humourous watching the weather forecasts, where the max for the day was going to be -14°, with a low of -37°.

I was born in Moscow and lived there for 25 years. I must admit it does get below -30 but not very often.
I read Russian astronomy forums and it always amazes me how such frost doesn't stop folk from stargazing for the whole night.

Lewis,
Canberra has made a special welcome just for you.

When I came to this place in the late 70's I experienced a similar welcome.

One day the fog did not lift until about 2 in the afternoon. The next day the water pipes were frozen until about 3 in the afternoon. I wondered "what have I done?"

Some mentioned extremes. I think this qualifies - one Christmas day I flew to Perth, it was snowing here and it was > +40 on the tarmac in Perth. What a country !

You get use to the night temperatures (eventually - been here about 35 years give or take). I have been outside at 2AM in June with a t-shirt and shorts on and my concession to the cold was a pair of slippers. You just notice the unimportant when the sky is so great. My wife recons she will get up one morning and find me frozen to death with my eye still at the eyepiece.

Ed

Ha ha Lewis, I recall my first "cold" astro observing night in Canberra back in Autumn 1984...it got down to about 2 or 3 dec C and I was bluudy freeeezing!! I had lived all my life in Newcastle and such single digit temps were unheard off!...I quickly came to enjoy the relatively common mid winter -6 or -7 degC's....you guys will eventually love it too, warm fires, warm Gluhwein, wee single malt dram's etc aaahhh

Mike
