How do I link Thunderbird to my existing Google mail account?

Open Tools/account settings, enter your gmail address
Open Tools/server settings, server name: imap.googlemail.com
Username, your gmail address
Connection Security, SSL/TLS
Authentication Method, Normal Password
Outgoing Server SMTP, smtp.googlemail.com
Port 465 (default)
Click OK, then select Get Messages. On first connect you will be asked for your password, enter and save ok. Job done. :-)

Thanks Malcolm. I had no problem in entering the settings that you gave me. However after Get Messages I receive the reply that "Mail server imap.googlemail.com responded: Username and password not accepted."
I have received a similar response with earlier attempts at linking Thunderbird and as a result I tried selecting in Googlemail the settings "allow sign in from a less secure app" and I have disabled "2 step verification to retain password only" ie no mobile verification. My usual username is a gmail address - perhaps I could try renewing my Google password?
Are there other "tricks" I can try?
