How to find SCP fast!

I had a good loooonnnngggg think about a sure-fire way to find the SCP in a shorter time when you have to pack up your mount each time you use it, then find the SCP again when you set up. Folks with permanent set-ups don't have this problem.

This is the method I used last night, and it was very fast!

First, I lined up my scope a close to perpendicular as I could to the mount.

Then I used my laser (mounted on top of the ED80) and while looking through binoculars at SCP, I aimed the laser as close as possible to SCPby moving the mount (scope and all) while using Binocs until the laser was very near SCP.

Then I used the ED80 (The binocs got me fairly close actually). Looking through the ED80 I zeroed the laser in on the correct position for SCP according to Sigma Octans (only move the mount adjustments, not the scopes axis).

Then I used the Polar Scope in the mount. The Octans stars were in there! By rotating the head around I positioned the Octans 'star markers' to the same orientation as the real Octans stars. At this point I was only a fraction off SCP!!!

A quarter of a turn on the Altitude and about a zillionth on the Azimuth and I had perfect alignment on SCP.

If you don't like using your polarscope (I know many people don't), there is a star that is actually closer to the SCP than Sigma. In dark skies it is relatively easy to see ( I don't think you will see it in Cities). It is called HD110994 and lies right next to SCP. There is one slightly closer but I was struggling to find it (HD99685). Just place your scope perpendicular to the mount, lock it, and move the mount until you have HD110994 in the right spot in the scope.

If you can see HR8294, then you'll probably see HD110994 as they have similiar Mags, but HD110994 is a yellow/orange, so you may not see it straight away.

I have attached 3 pics.

1. The sky at a dark sky site so you can familiarise yourself with finding Octans.

2. The Octans 'box' and the SCP marked on the real sky . You will see the Orange star (HD110994) to the left of SCP.

3. A star map of the SCP showing the stars I am referring to.

Good luck and happy SCP'ing which ever method you use.

I hope this has helped someone, It sure worked fast for me.

Sorry Eric, that is the full pic but Crux is in an almost straight line from SMC (lower right) thru the SCP and out the other side of the pic.
